When it comes to meditation, the environment that you choose to meditate in matters. Although the ultimate goal is to be able to meditate in any environment (despite external distractions), creating a peaceful meditative space in your home can help to make your meditation as calming and effective as possible. Although a meditation space is not mandatory, it will help you to establish a routine, find relaxation and break the initial resistance that many of us feel as soon as we sit still and try to find that quiet inner place. Here are some tips for creating a peaceful meditation space in your home:

Choose the right space

Consider the purpose you want your space to serve – do you want it to be secluded? Is it just for you, or can your partner/family/housemates use it too? The purpose of your space will help you to determine which space to use and how you should decorate it.

When looking for a space, take into consideration the lighting, the air flow, the view, how quiet it is and whether people will be walking past. If you don’t have a whole room to decorate as your meditation space, a corner of a room will work just as well. You can even use a section of your garden. The main goal is to find a place that brings you a sense of calm and where you will be free from disturbances.

Decorate the space

Once you’ve found your space, it’s time to decorate it. Some basics for your meditation space could be a nice hand knotted rug, a comfortable meditation pillow and a dim lamp. If you would like to decorate your space further, think about a meditation shawl or any objects that bring you peace and serenity, and incorporate these into the space. Typical items for a meditation space include candles, photos, flowers or calming images, but it’s up to you to choose something that is meaningful to you. Don’t go overboard and clutter the space – the primary aim of meditation is to achieve heightened self-awareness.

Embrace nature

By adding an element of nature, to your space can add a sense of balance and harmony – consider adding a plant, candles, a water feature or any other piece of nature that you find meaningful.

Make the space sacred

Use your meditation space for meditation (or quiet time) only. You should associate this space with stillness, calmness and the act of taking time to focus on yourself. Avoid bringing technology into the space  and keep it as natural and as simple as possible. Your meditation space should remind you of the stillness within.
